Togo Targets Eradication of Neglected Tropical Diseases by 2030
Togo has undertaken a significant initiative to eradicate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by 2030. On January 29, 2026, in Lomé, the Togolese government unveiled its strategic plan aimed at combating these diseases. This announcement coincided with the World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, observed every January 30.
Togo’s Commitment to Eradication of Neglected Tropical Diseases
The minister of health emphasized the critical need to eliminate several diseases, including:
- Onchocerciasis
- Schistosomiasis
- Leprosy
- Yaws
These diseases significantly impact productivity, education, and household income, particularly in rural areas. The government recognizes that addressing these health challenges can greatly improve the quality of life for its citizens.
Support from the World Health Organization
Dr. Mamadou Nouhou, representing the World Health Organization in Togo, praised the country’s commitment. He stated that Togo is a leader in the fight against NTDs, asserting that “no one should be left behind.” The government’s proactive stance mirrors its historical role as a pioneer in NTD eradication.
Notably, Togo was the first country to successfully eliminate four neglected tropical diseases as public health issues:
- Lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis)
- African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness)
- Trachoma
- Dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease)
This achievement positions Togo as a model for other nations striving to tackle neglected tropical diseases effectively.
Path Forward for Togo
As Togo moves toward the 2030 target, the government plans to implement comprehensive health care strategies. Collaboration with international health organizations and local communities will be essential in this endeavor.
In summary, Togo is determined to eliminate neglected tropical diseases by 2030, leveraging its previous successes and strong leadership. This initiative not only aims to improve health outcomes but also to enhance overall socio-economic conditions across the nation.
