Retired Star Returns After Two Years to Compete in World Cup

Marcelo Moreno Martins, a notable figure in Bolivian football, has made headlines once again. At the age of 38, he announced his unexpected return to professional football after a two-year hiatus. He will play for Oriente Petrolero, a club in his native Bolivia.
Return to Compete
Moreno Martins had not played since December 2023 with Independiente del Valle. Initially, he had decided to retire from football. However, he has chosen to lace up his boots once more with a specific aim in mind: to return to the Bolivian national team. His ambition is to compete in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, starting with a crucial match against Surinam on March 26, 2026.
Support from the Federation
This strategic move has gained the endorsement of Fernando Costa, the president of the Bolivian Football Federation. Costa remarked, “We have a great opportunity after 30 years to make it to the World Cup, and we must utilize all the talent available.”
Record-Breaking Career
Marcelo Moreno Martins holds several impressive records. He is the all-time leading scorer for the Bolivian national team, netting 31 goals in 108 matches. This record includes being the third all-time leading scorer in South American World Cup qualifiers, with 22 goals.
A Decade of Experience
Moreno Martins began his professional career in 2003 at Oriente Petrolero. He also enjoyed significant stints at various clubs, including:
- Cruzeiro (2007-2008)
- Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)
- Wigan (England)
- Grêmio and Flamengo (Brazil)
- Cerro Porteño (Paraguay)
After a commendable career, he returned to Oriente Petrolero in 2020. As he prepares for his return, the current national team coach, Oscar Villegas, expressed an open-minded approach regarding Moreno Martins’ role on the team.
Recent Struggles in Attack
Despite their historical potential, Bolivia’s national team has faced challenges. In their last seven matches, the team scored only two goals, testing various players, including Carmelo Algarañaz and Enzo Monteiro, among others. Villegas has stated, “The selection is not closed for anyone,” indicating that every player’s contribution, including Moreno Martins, could be significant.
As fans await the upcoming qualifiers, Moreno Martins’ return to competitive football adds excitement for Bolivia’s prospects in the 2026 World Cup race.
