Cycling Superhighway to Connect Ghent and Antwerp by 2030

The F4 cycling superhighway is set to link Ghent and Antwerp, enhancing connectivity between these two provincial capitals. Spanning 48 kilometers, the route runs parallel to the railway line and traverses key towns, including Lochristi, Lokeren, and Sint-Niklaas.
Cycling Superhighway Development Timeline
Phase one has seen various sections of the cycling superhighway completed. Kurt Moens, a member of the East Flanders provincial executive, highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance road safety. This includes the construction of new cycle bridges and tunnels, with a target for full completion by 2030.
Recent Construction Initiatives
- A new cycle tunnel is being built under the N70 road in Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht.
- Located near Gentseweg, this tunnel aims to improve safety for cyclists.
- The tunnel is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
Once finished, cyclists will be able to cross the N70 safely, avoiding dangerous intersections. Moens emphasizes the importance of creating smooth and secure cycling connections across East Flanders.
Enhancements for Cyclists
The F4 superhighway currently accommodates over 1,000 cyclists daily. The new infrastructure will significantly improve safety and comfort for these riders.
Two additional cycle tunnels are also planned. One will be situated beneath the railway line and another near Hof ter Saksen, both in the Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht area. Local alderman Jeroen Verhulst notes that the introduction of 4-meter-wide cycle paths will enhance the quality of cycling traffic along the F4.
Phased Approach to Development
- Phase 1: Safe crossing under the N70 and separate paths along Hotel Beveren.
- Phase 2: Increase connectivity from Haasdonk and southern Beveren to the F4.
This phased approach is designed to resolve existing conflicts and improve the overall cycling experience in the region.
