OPP Investigates Series of Dangerous Guardrail Crashes

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a series of dangerous guardrail crashes that have raised concerns in southern Ontario. Two severe incidents occurred on January 26 at the Kitchener flyover, resulting in one fatality and an uptick in similar events across the region.

Incident Overview

  • Date: January 26
  • Location: Kitchener flyover
  • Fatalities: 1 (Waterloo woman)
  • Recent similar incidents: QEW in Niagara, Highway 427 (GTA)

Both vehicles involved in the Kitchener incidents lost control and traveled onto a snow-covered shoulder. They subsequently crashed over the guardrail, falling onto the highway below. Tragically, one of these crashes resulted in the death of a woman who was driving one of the vehicles.

Continuing Investigations

The OPP reported that the week following the Kitchener incidents saw additional guardrail-related crashes. No fatalities occurred in this subsequent wave of collisions. OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt noted that despite the adverse conditions, “the highways themselves had been plowed and salted.”

The investigation into these incidents is ongoing. OPP highlighted that driver error has been a significant factor in all four recent crashes. In light of this information, Schmidt emphasized the importance of driving cautiously in winter conditions.

Regional Response

Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) indicated it has responded to more collisions this winter than in the entire previous season. This increase in incidents has prompted OPP to remind drivers to adjust their speeds and exercise caution as they navigate winter roads.

Collaborative Efforts

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is reviewing its winter maintenance operations, particularly what transpired during the time of the crashes. OPP collaborates closely with MTO and road maintenance contractors responsible for snow removal. However, several inquiries to the MTO regarding their ongoing efforts and snow-clearing operations have gone unanswered.

As authorities continue to monitor these troubling trends, the calls for increased driver vigilance in adverse weather conditions only grow louder. Ensuring safety on the roads remains a priority as investigations unfold.
