Algoma University Supports Local Curler in Second Olympic Bid

As the 2026 Winter Olympic Games approach, Algoma University is rallying its community to support graduate Brad Jacobs. The Olympic gold medallist and former student will represent Canada for the second time at the upcoming event in Italy.

This week, a celebration was held on campus honoring Jacobs. Various groups, including the Algoma Thunderbirds Varsity Academic All-Canadians from the men’s and women’s curling teams, came together to wish him success in the Olympic Games.

Jacobs reflected on the impact Algoma University has had on his career. “My time at Algoma U helped instill the discipline, teamwork, and mindset that continue to guide me today,” he stated. He graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography.

Coaching and Leadership

Tom Coulterman, the Varsity Curling Head Coach at Algoma University, expressed pride in Jacobs’ achievements. He noted, “It has been an honour to coach Brad and watch his growth over the years.” The entire Thunderbirds program stands united in support of Jacobs as he prepares for the challenges ahead.

Community Encouragement

As Jacobs heads to Italy, the Algoma community will actively cheer for him and his teammates. City Mayor Matthew Shoemaker has also extended his best wishes on social media, emphasizing the pride felt by the local community.
