Michelin-Starred Restaurant Closes Amidst Tough Decision

A Michelin-starred restaurant has permanently closed after 16 years of operation due to several financial challenges. Six Rooftop, perched atop Gateshead’s Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, announced its closure on February 2, following a period of persistent losses and difficult trading conditions.

Challenges Facing Six Rooftop

Six Rooftop cited mounting costs and an unstable economic climate as key factors leading to its decision. The restaurant had absorbed increased expenses for as long as possible without transferring the burden to its customers. However, the cumulative financial strain ultimately became unmanageable.

Refunds and Customer Communication

  • All valid gift vouchers will be refunded.
  • Customers are advised to contact the restaurant with booking details for refunds.
  • Upcoming reservations will be addressed with alternative arrangements or cancellations.

Six Rooftop was renowned for its high-quality meals and stunning views of the River Tyne. It had earned a spot in the Michelin Guide in April 2024, which solidified its reputation in the culinary world.

Recent Trends in the Restaurant Industry

This closure follows another high-profile shuttering in the region. Hjem, an award-winning Michelin-star restaurant located at the Hadrian Hotel in Hexham, also closed its doors shortly before Six Rooftop. On New Year’s Eve, Hjem held a farewell event titled “Hjem’s Last Hurrah,” celebrating its achievements and thanking its patrons.

These closures highlight the challenges faced by establishments in the hospitality sector, as they navigate increasing operational costs and shifting market dynamics.
