Schools Delay Opening Wednesday Due to Ice: “Safety First”

Schools in the municipality of Groningen will open later on Wednesday due to anticipated ice conditions. This decision prioritizes the safety of students and staff.
Delayed School Openings for Safety Reasons
According to Sjors van Broekhuizen from Public Education Groningen, schools will adjust their schedules. “We begin later on Wednesday,” he stated. An orange weather warning is in effect, expected to last until 10 AM. As such, elementary schools will open at 10:30 AM, while secondary education institutions will begin at 11:00 AM.
Public Transport Adjustments
This decision aligns with Qbuzz’s announcement, which indicated that bus services will commence at 10:30 AM. Van Broekhuizen reassured parents, “Students making long journeys won’t need to worry about tardiness if they arrive around 11:15 AM due to slippery conditions.”
Special Considerations for Teachers and Students
The Groningen School Council (VCOG) operates across twelve locations in the municipality. They confirmed lessons will start at 10:30 AM, although some exceptions may apply. Robert de Wit commented, “We are currently assessing the need for emergency and childcare options. Special arrangements may be necessary for schools with specific groups, such as newcomers.”
Importance of Standardized Testing
An essential test for eighth-grade students is taking place this week. “This is a crucial moment for our students. We will handle it with care and make necessary adjustments,” de Wit added.
Updates for Wednesday Morning
- The Willem Lodewijk Gymnasium (WLG) is also modifying its schedule. Lessons will start at 11:10 AM with doors opening at 10:30 AM.
- All schools are closely monitoring the weather situation. Should the icy conditions persist longer than anticipated, schedule changes will be communicated before 9:30 AM on Wednesday.
- The CSG schools will likewise begin later, and their childcare facilities operated by SKSG will also open at 10:30 AM, with some locations available earlier for parents needing assistance.
