The Mowlem to Host Talks on Future of North Swanage Coastline

Residents of North Swanage will have the opportunity to learn about long-term coastal management plans at an upcoming event. The Mowlem Studio in Swanage, Dorset, will host a drop-in session on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 4 PM to 8 PM. The session will feature a presentation at 5 PM by Ross Fitzgerald, an associate director of geomorphology at Jacobs, a consulting firm.

The Future Coast Dorset Project

The event aims to address pressing issues related to coastal change in the region. In 2024, the Dorset Council received £3 million in government funding to support the Future Coast Dorset project, which focuses on North Swanage and Charmouth. Both locations are facing significant risks due to coastal erosion.

Project Goals

  • Enhance community resilience against coastal changes.
  • Improve beach access and infrastructure.
  • Raise awareness of coastal risks.
  • Create long-term adaptation plans.

As part of the initiative, localized activities such as walks and talks will be conducted by project officer Sara Parker. These will take place along North Beach, from Ocean Bay to the base of The Pines Hotel, starting on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at 11 AM, and again on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 9:30 AM. These events will engage residents in discussions about coastal issues.

Community Engagement

Councillor Gary Suttle, representing Swanage on the Dorset Council, emphasized the importance of community involvement. He stated, “Coastal erosion will shape Swanage’s future, so how we plan and react as a community is vital for all residents.” Residents are encouraged to voice their opinions during the session and participate in the structured walks.

Ongoing Challenges

The coastline faces multiple challenges, including landslips that block access routes like Sheps Hollow. The narrow paths are constantly impacted by soil and debris falling from cliffs. Concerns are rising that the area’s charm may diminish, with potential solutions involving engineered interventions that some fear could impact the natural landscape.

The Future Coast Dorset project is set to run until March 2027, focusing on ensuring that Swanage and Charmouth can effectively adapt to future coastal changes. This initiative strives to secure a resilient and sustainable coastline for generations to come.
