Margate’s Dreamland: Reliving Memories of the Scenic Railway Rollercoaster

Dreamland in Margate holds a special place in the hearts of many, particularly those involved with its iconic Scenic Railway rollercoaster. This cherished attraction has seen generations of visitors and staff who have made lasting memories at the park.
Memories of the Scenic Railway Rollercoaster
For Shelley Nicholls, her connection to Dreamland runs deep. Having grown up visiting the amusement park, she became part of its team when it reopened in 2015. Nicholls worked front of house and noted that the days when the Scenic Railway was not operational were particularly disappointing. She highlighted the significance of the ride, stating, “Technically she’s only 10 years old. She was rebuilt and rebuilt for a reason.”
Staff Perspectives on the Scenic Railway
Former park employee Dave Collard also shares a fondness for the rollercoaster. He began his journey at Dreamland in the 1990s as a brakeman. Collard reminisced about the excitement surrounding the Scenic Railway, recalling how visitors often formed long lines to enjoy the ride. “So many people wanted to come on the ride and talk to you as well,” he said, reflecting the strong connection between the staff and the park-goers.
He described memorable moments during the ride, especially during the Thursday night fireworks. “We would just sit up there and watch the fireworks,” Collard explained. These shared experiences contributed to a lasting affection for both the Scenic Railway and the staff who made visiting Dreamland special.
