Yorkshire Company Wins £8M Contract to Clear Kidlington Waste

A Yorkshire-based company has secured an £8 million contract to manage a significant waste clearance project in Kidlington, Oxfordshire. Acumen Waste Services, located in Knottingley, will address the illegal rubbish dump near the River Cherwell. This contract was awarded without a formal tender process, and the funding will come from taxpayer money.
Details of the Clearance Project
The area in question has been identified as a critical fire risk, according to the Environment Agency. A spokesperson emphasized the urgency of clearing the waste. “Our priority is to remove the waste as quickly as possible while maintaining strong financial, environmental, and operational oversight,” they stated.
Extent of the Waste Problem
Estimates indicate that approximately 10,000 tonnes of illegal waste have been dumped at this site. The rubbish pile has reached a height of 12 meters and spans 150 meters alongside the A34. This site was first closed in October when the issue became public knowledge.
Timeline and Operations
Clearance efforts are set to begin in February. The government’s environment minister, Mary Creagh, noted that initial assessments suggest the full cleanup could take six to nine months. Already, several damaged trees have been removed to allow access for clearance operations.
Environmental Measures
- The Environment Agency has committed to planting two trees for each one removed during the clearance.
- Acumen Waste Services will provide a comprehensive waste management solution, including:
- Site preparation
- Waste characterization
- Segregation and handling
- Transportation
- Disposal at licensed facilities
Financial Oversight and Accountability
While the cost of the project is currently covered by the taxpayer, the Environment Agency plans to pursue recovery of these funds. “The taxpayer shouldn’t pay for the crimes of others,” said a spokesperson. Financial reviews and benchmarking against similar projects will ensure proper management of expenses.
As the investigation into the illegal dumping continues, local MP Calum Miller has been approached for comments regarding the situation. The Environment Agency remains committed to holding those responsible accountable.
