Independent Venue Week Celebrates Passion Over Profit

Independent Venue Week (IVW) brings a spotlight on smaller venues that prioritize passion over profit. This annual event celebrates the unique contributions of independent spaces to the music scene.
Artisan Tap’s Commitment to Live Music
Scott Evans, owner of the Artisan Tap in Stoke-on-Trent, emphasizes the hard work he and his wife, Jayne, have put into establishing the venue’s reputation for live performances. They have owned the Artisan Tap since 2024 and have consistently hosted at least five live acts weekly.
During Independent Venue Week, the Artisan Tap will feature events every day. Scott wears multiple hats, serving as the venue owner, promoter, and sound engineer, while Jayne manages the bar. This diverse approach helps keep operational costs down, allowing them to host gigs that may not be purely profitable.
Previous Highlights and Upcoming Acts
Although still developing, the venue has previously hosted musicians who have since gained significant fame. This week, the Artisan Tap will feature notable artists, including:
- John Bramwell from the Manchester band I am Kloot
- Tom Hingley, frontman of Inspiral Carpets
- The rising band Wrex, known for building a solid following
Evans notes that the upcoming performance by Wrex could be their last at the Artisan Tap before they transition to larger venues. Such opportunities showcase the importance of independent venues in nurturing talent and offering a platform for emerging artists.
The Importance of Independent Venue Week
Independent Venue Week underscores the passion-driven efforts of small venues and their impact on the music landscape. Events like these foster a community spirit while supporting local and aspiring musicians. It’s a celebration of dedication, creativity, and the love for live music that transcends mere profit margins.
