Helen Flanagan Criticizes Coronation Street for Rosie Webster Scenes

Helen Flanagan, known for her role as Rosie Webster in the long-running soap opera “Coronation Street,” has publicly criticized how the show handled certain scenes featuring her character. Flanagan, who joined the cast in 2000, reflected on her experiences during her time on the show as her memoir, “Head & Heart,” is released.
Controversial Storylines in “Coronation Street”
Flanagan, born in 1990, was just 16 when her character became embroiled in a grooming storyline. The plot involved her being manipulated by John Stape, a violent character portrayed as a teacher and serial killer. Flanagan expressed discomfort with the sexualized nature of the scenes she was tasked with performing.
Industry Changes and Personal Reflections
Speaking to The Mirror, Flanagan stated, “Was it morally right that I was expected to parade about in my knickers like some mad nymphomaniac when I was still just a teenager?” She reminisced about comments made by fellow actress Alison King regarding the sexualization of young women in media.
Flanagan noted, “I didn’t fully comprehend what she was talking about at the time. I do now. I get it.” She further explained that she had to perform intimate scenes with an actor significantly older than herself, which she felt uncomfortable about. “I felt minging post-shoot,” she added.
Post-Me Too Movement
Reflecting on how the industry has evolved, Flanagan mentioned that such storylines would likely not be written in the same way today, especially in the wake of the Me Too movement. She expressed relief over these changes, stating, “Everything has changed now, which I’m glad about.”
Empowerment and Sexuality
Despite her criticisms, Flanagan clarified that she has no qualms about sexualized content in general. “I post sexy pictures. I work for different lingerie brands. I enjoy that. I like to feel sexy. I like to feel empowered — and in control. That’s the difference,” she explained.
Current Projects
In addition to her memoir, Flanagan is currently performing in the play “The Memory of Water” in Bolton. “Coronation Street” continues to air on weeknights at 8:30 PM on ITV1 and is available for streaming on ITVX.
