Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology Closes Due to Decline in International Enrolment

The Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT) is set to cease operations within the next year due to a significant drop in international student enrolment. The Winnipeg-based institution announced the closure following a federal cap that led to a decline exceeding 55% in international enrolment.

Reasons Behind MITT’s Closure

The decline in enrolment has rendered MITT’s financial model unsustainable. A memo from the institution confirmed that the provincial government has decided to end its operations. Consequently, an unspecified number of MITT programs will be transferred to RRC Polytech.

Impact on Current Students

MITT is committed to collaborating with the provincial government and RRC Polytech to develop a plan that enables students to complete their programs. This support will extend to students across various educational levels, including:

  • Post-secondary education
  • High school (Grade 11 and Grade 12)
  • Adult learning
  • Industry training
  • English language programs

Programs Offered at MITT

The Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology provided training in several in-demand fields. Notable areas of focus included:

  • Early childhood education
  • Welding
  • Carpentry
  • Cybersecurity

In its latest annual report for 2024-25, MITT noted an overall enrolment of 4,663 students, though it did not specify how many were international students.

Reactions from Educational Leaders

RRC Polytech President Fred Meier expressed concerns regarding the impact of the federal government’s cap on international students. In a memo to staff, he criticized the decision for not addressing Manitoba’s specific market needs. He emphasized the overlap in program offerings between RRC Polytech and MITT, adding that a review of MITT’s programs will help identify which will be continued.

Meier acknowledged the emotional toll of this news on MITT employees, clarifying that the closure should not be seen as a reflection of their hard work.
