Chandra Storm Named: Meteorologists Announce New Threat

Storm Chandra, a significant weather event, has been officially named by meteorologists. The storm is set to impact the UK with high winds and heavy rainfall, particularly on Monday night and Tuesday.
Weather Warnings and Expected Impacts
As Storm Chandra approaches, several weather warnings have been issued. An Amber warning is in effect for eastern Northern Ireland due to anticipated wind gusts reaching up to 75 mph. These strong winds will also affect the Isles of Scilly, western Cornwall, and southwest Wales.
Additionally, a Yellow warning has been issued for parts of Cornwall, southwestern Wales, and northern Devon. Locally, areas in south Devon, much of Dorset, and southern Somerset are under an Amber rain warning. These regions could experience rainfall totals ranging from 30 to 50 mm, with higher elevations potentially receiving as much as 80 mm.
Snowfall Warnings in Northern Areas
In the northern parts of the UK, Storm Chandra will interact with colder air, leading to snowfall. Yellow warnings for snow have been issued for Scotland and northern England, where accumulations of 2 to 5 cm are expected. In hilly areas over 500 meters, snowfalls may reach 10 to 20 cm.
Safety Measures and Flooding Advice
- Do not walk, drive, or swim through floodwaters.
- Contact emergency services by dialing 999 if you are in danger from fast-moving water.
- Prepare a flood kit with essential supplies, including documents, food, and medical items.
Chris Wilding, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, alerted communities to the risk of surface water flooding in southwest England. He emphasized the importance of avoiding floodwaters, as even small amounts can be dangerous. The Environment Agency is mobilizing teams to mitigate potential flooding impacts.
Continued Unsettled Weather
The weather will remain unsettled for the week. While Wednesday may offer some respite with drier conditions in the east, rain and cloud cover will continue in the west.
