The City of Toronto has ramped up its snow removal efforts following a historic winter storm. With 600 plows and 1,000 city and contract workers engaged in snow cleanup, the city has entered the second phase of its snow response: the removal of snow from streets and sidewalks.
Phased Snow Removal Process in Toronto
During a press conference at the TTC’s Hillcrest Yard, City Manager Paul Johnson outlined the city’s phased approach to snow response. This includes salting and brining prior to the storm, followed by plowing during and after the event. The massive task of removing accumulated snow now commences.
Priority Areas and Residential Zones
- Removal from priority zones, including hospitals and TTC stops, began immediately following the storm.
- Citywide snow removal from residential areas is set to start on Wednesday.
Mayor Olivia Chow announced that crews will be informing residents about the snow removal schedule for their blocks over the next few days. She urged residents to begin clearing their driveways, emphasizing the need for every individual to contribute by helping neighbors in need.
Community Involvement and Parking Regulations
Residents are encouraged to be proactive in snow shoveling. Johnson reminded citizens that maintaining clear snow routes is crucial for the efficient operation of snow removal vehicles. He stated that parking enforcement on designated snow routes will continue, stressing the importance of keeping these areas accessible for crews.
Managing Sidewalk Clearing and Addressing Challenges
Johnson addressed concerns regarding sidewalk clearing. The process involves initially creating a narrow path, then widening it before fully removing the snow. He urged patience from residents as crews work to escalate efforts in the coming days. For those with mobility issues, assistance can be requested via a call to 3-1-1.
Expanding Snow Removal Capacity
To enhance its snow removal capabilities, the City of Toronto has secured an additional snow dump site in Etobicoke, bringing the total to six sites across the city. Previously malfunctioning snow melters are now operational, and two new melters have been purchased, allowing for increased efficiency in snow handling.
While Johnson did not provide specific figures on the enhanced removal capacity, he noted its necessity due to the unprecedented snowfall recorded. The additional site aims to alleviate snow storage challenges faced by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), ensuring the public transit system can operate smoothly.
