Transporters Deplore Ignored School Bus Stop Signs

The Federation of Bus Transporters (FTA) expresses concern over the alarming tendency of drivers ignoring school bus stop signs. Despite awareness campaigns, many motorists fail to stop when a yellow bus activates its stop signal, endangering children’s safety.

Statistics on School Bus Stop Sign Violations

As part of its 38th awareness campaign, the FTA released notable statistics on infractions concerning school bus stop signs in Quebec. In 2024, the province recorded 939 fines for drivers who failed to respect these stop signals. This figure represents a 15% increase from 2020, where just over 800 tickets were issued. Yet, compared to the preceding three years, the numbers are slightly lower.

  • 2021: Approximately 1000 violations
  • 2022: Approximately 1000 violations
  • 2023: 945 violations

Demographics of Offenders

The FTA’s interim CEO, Luc Lafrance, shared concerns about the age of offenders. Nearly 52% of those penalized for violating school bus stop signals are aged between 25 and 44. This demographic notably includes many parents of school-aged children, which raises further alarm.

Reasons for Violations

Multiple factors may contribute to the disregard for school bus stop signals. Distractions while driving or parents hurrying after dropping children off at school play significant roles. Nevertheless, Lafrance emphasizes that these factors do not justify such behavior and insists that the regulations are well-known.

Consequences of Ignoring School Bus Signals

Failing to stop for a school bus carries severe penalties. Motorists risk losing nine points from their driving license and face fines of $300. Lafrance urges drivers to think critically before neglecting to respect the flashing lights of a school bus.

Importance of Awareness Campaigns

The FTA is committed to highlighting the importance of adhering to school bus stop signals during their “M’as-tu vu?” campaign. School children often enter and exit buses in groups, making them vulnerable while crossing the street. It is imperative for drivers to remain vigilant and watch for any unexpected movements by children near school buses.

Safety Initiatives

Throughout the awareness week, various initiatives will be conducted by transporters and school service centers. These efforts aim to reinforce safe practices around school buses. Over the past 18 years, only three children have tragically lost their lives in accidents involving school buses, underscoring the critical nature of these awareness initiatives.
