DWP Announces £775 Bonus Payments on Benefits Before April

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced a financial assistance program that could provide UK households with up to £775 through various winter support initiatives. These programs aim to help eligible individuals cover energy costs, grocery expenses, and other essential needs until the end of March 2026.

Overview of the Winter Support Programs

The support package consists of four main schemes:

  • Household Support Fund
  • Winter Fuel Payment
  • Warm Home Discount Scheme
  • Cold Weather Payments

Each program has its own eligibility criteria, allowing some recipients to benefit from multiple forms of assistance. It is important to note that all financial support must be claimed by April, providing eligible households roughly two months to apply.

Household Support Fund – Up to £600

The Household Support Fund is the most substantial aid source, with a total allocation of £742 million to local authorities in England. Payments vary across regions:

  • Herefordshire residents may receive grants up to £600, with an average award around £480.
  • Staffordshire provides £300 directly to utility providers.
  • Surrey offers supermarket vouchers equivalent to £300 through an E-voucher scheme.
  • Calderdale has payments totaling £170, while Nottingham offers combined vouchers worth £173.
  • Manchester residents on Council Tax support with disability benefits can access £130.

Application processes differ by council. Some councils allow one claim per year, while others provide funds through local charities.

Winter Fuel Payment – Up to £300

Pensioners born before September 22, 1959, in England or Wales may qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment, which ranges from £100 to £300. The payment amount depends on the recipient’s birth date and their circumstances during the qualifying period from September 15 to 21, 2025. Most eligible pensioners typically receive their payments automatically in November or December.

The DWP recommends that any pensioners who have not received their payments by January 28, 2026, should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre for assistance. Claims for the 2025-2026 winter period must be made by March 31, 2026.

Warm Home Discount – £150

The Warm Home Discount Scheme offers a £150 credit on electricity bills for qualifying households in England and Wales. To benefit, recipients must be the account holder and receive means-tested benefits, including:

  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance

This discount is applied automatically by energy suppliers by March 31, 2026, requiring no action from eligible households. Residents in Scotland should reach out to their energy providers for specific eligibility criteria.

Cold Weather Payments – £25

Cold Weather Payments of £25 are automatically issued when temperatures fall to freezing or below for seven consecutive days. Eligibility extends to those receiving Pension Credit, Income Support, or Universal Credit, with payments arriving within 14 working days following each qualifying weather event.
