Blue Jays Sign 27-Year-Old Pitcher After Rival Team Release

The Toronto Blue Jays have made significant roster changes as they prepare for the upcoming season. While the team has lost infielder Bo Bichette, they remain optimistic about their overall lineup and pitching depth.
Blue Jays Sign 27-Year-Old Pitcher Brendan Cellucci
In a recent move, the Blue Jays signed pitcher Brendan Cellucci after his release from the Boston Red Sox. Cellucci, a 27-year-old lefty, was an intriguing addition to the team’s minor league system.
Cellucci’s Career Background
- Cellucci was selected in the 12th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
- He played collegiately at Tulane University.
- During his tenure in the Red Sox organization, he made 179 appearances in the minor leagues.
- He recorded a 5.00 ERA over 259 innings pitched, striking out 350 batters.
- However, he also walked 184 batters and allowed 41 wild pitches.
Despite showcasing strikeout ability, Cellucci struggled with control, leading to his release from the Red Sox in July. He then played for the York Revolution in the independent Atlantic League and participated in a winter league in Puerto Rico.
Current Blue Jays Roster
As of now, the Blue Jays have built impressive pitching depth. With new arrivals Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Tyler Rogers, the team’s rotation looks considerably improved. Only Kevin Gausman remains from the 2025 Opening Day roster.
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic notes that the Blue Jays have restructured their pitching staff. Despite losing Bichette, the team has positioned itself as one of the offseason’s most improved squads by Wins Above Replacement (WAR).
Going forward, Cellucci will join the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats as he seeks to refine his skills. While competition is steep for a spot on the major league team, the Blue Jays are hopeful that his addition could bolster their pitching prospects in the long run.
