Cold Alert: N.S. Braces for Plummeting Temperatures

Residents of Nova Scotia are preparing for a significant drop in temperatures this weekend. The province is expected to experience freezing conditions and potentially heavy snowfall.
Cold Alert: N.S. Braces for Plummeting Temperatures
Environment Canada has issued cold weather warnings for Cumberland and northern Colchester counties. Wind chill values could plummet to between -25°C and -30°C starting Saturday morning through Sunday.
Snowfall and Additional Weather Warnings
A special weather statement has been released for the Halifax area. Between Sunday night and Tuesday morning, this system is expected to bring:
- Up to 25 cm of snow
- Strong winds accompanying the snow
Halifax residents should anticipate wind chills in the -20s from Friday night through Sunday. Meteorologist Allister Aalders of CityNews Halifax cautions that although elevated wind chills are not uncommon in winter, they raise the risks of hypothermia and frostbite.
“Exposed skin can freeze in as little as 10 minutes,” Aalders noted, emphasizing the importance of safety during these cold conditions.
Forecast and Recommendations
In addition to the cold temperatures, a weather system forming over the weekend is set to contribute to further snowfall. This could lead to a prolonged snowfall event.
Aalders suggests that Halifax may see a minimum of 20 cm of snow by early Tuesday, with potential for even greater accumulations. Local residents are advised to monitor the forecast closely throughout the weekend to stay prepared.
