Kano Governor and Officials Exit NNPP Together

Kano State has witnessed a significant political shift as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). This decision was officially announced in a statement from his spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, on Friday.

Kano Governor Resigns from NNPP

Yusuf, in his resignation letter to the NNPP’s Diso-Chiranchi Ward Chairman, stated that his departure is effective as of January 23, 2026. He expressed gratitude to the party for supporting his political career since 2022. However, he cited ongoing leadership disputes and legal battles within the party as a rationale for his decision.

Reasons for Resignation

The governor highlighted several issues plaguing the NNPP:

  • Persistent internal leadership disagreements.
  • Ongoing legal challenges affecting party cohesion.
  • Growing disenfranchisement among party members.

Yusuf emphasized that these issues have created deep divisions, making the party’s future uncertain. He expressed that his resignation was in the best interest of Kano State and was made with careful consideration.

Political Fallout

The resignation not only includes Governor Yusuf but also involves:

  • 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly.
  • 8 members of the House of Representatives.
  • 44 local government chairmen.

Kabiru Zubairu, the Secretary of the NNPP Diso-Chiranchi Ward, acknowledged Yusuf’s contributions to infrastructure, health, education, and economic empowerment in the state. He noted the ongoing crises within the party and affirmed acceptance of the governor’s resignation, recognizing his performance.

Days prior to this announcement, Yusuf met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stirring speculation about his future political ambitions. This meeting may have played a role in his decision to leave the NNPP and potentially align with new political opportunities.
