Polar Vortex Brings Freezing Temperatures to the Province

Quebec residents are bracing for a polar vortex that is set to bring extreme cold this weekend. The initial effects have already been felt in some regions, with temperatures dropping sharply in the evening ahead of the full onset of frigid conditions. According to Environment Canada meteorologist Simon Legault, the arctic chill will last for approximately 48 hours.

Expected Temperature Drops Across the Province

Morning temperatures were already feeling like -35°C, with readings at Val-D’Or falling to around -26°C by 9 AM. The polar vortex is expected to affect various regions:

  • Lanaudière
  • Laurentides
  • Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean
  • Gaspésie
  • Montreal
  • Quebec City

Wind chill factors could plummet to between -35°C and -40°C in the north. In southern Quebec, including Montreal, wind chills may also reach near -30°C overnight from Saturday to Sunday. This deep freeze will see temperatures in Quebec City potentially lingering at around -20°C to -25°C.

Wind Chill Warnings and Precautions

While this cold snap does not set any temperature records, safety precautions are essential. Environmental Canada emphasizes dressing appropriately to cope with the extreme wind chill. Despite the chilly conditions, opportunities for outdoor activities remain. Legault notes that even with the wind, some sunshine will appear.

Duration of the Cold Weather

Although the polar vortex is predicted to last for just two days, temperatures significantly lower than seasonal averages may persist well into the end of the month and possibly early February.

Impact on Weather Systems

Interestingly, the cold weather in Quebec is expected to shield the province from a massive winter storm impacting parts of the United States. The state of affairs is such that Quebec is situated far from the warm front causing extreme weather conditions south of the border.

  • U.S. areas could see over 60 centimeters of snow.
  • Ice and sleet are also anticipated in regions affected by the storm.

Despite avoiding the severe impact of the U.S. storm system, Quebec is still likely to experience light snow accumulations from Sunday evening through Monday. The southern parts of the province might get 10 to 15 centimeters of snow, which could complicate Monday’s morning commute, particularly in Montreal.

Legault recommends that those able to work from home consider this option for Monday morning to mitigate travel challenges.
