Rangers’ Ironic Move: Trading Alexis Lafrenière in ‘Retool’ Strategy

The New York Rangers are entering a significant transition phase as they officially announce a retooling strategy. President and General Manager Chris Drury addressed fans through a letter, revealing the team’s decision to refrain from trades aimed at securing a playoff position. Instead, the focus will shift to trading players to acquire younger talent and valuable draft picks.
Rangers Explore Trade Options
Among the players reportedly on the trading block is Artemi Panarin. The Rangers have ceased discussions about a contract extension with him, and his no-move clause allows him some influence in any potential trade. Additionally, Vincent Trocheck’s future with the team may also be uncertain.
Notably, discussions surrounding the first-overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft, Alexis Lafrenière, have gained traction. NHL insider David Pagnotta reported that the Rangers might be open to big trade offers involving the young forward. This marks an ironic twist, as Lafrenière’s selection initially symbolized the end of the Rangers’ rebuilding phase.
Lafrenière’s Journey with the Rangers
- Lafrenière was expected to be a cornerstone player alongside Kaapo Kakko.
- Both were top picks in consecutive drafts, aimed at rejuvenating the franchise.
- However, their contributions have not met expectations, with Kakko being traded last season.
During the 2023-24 season, Lafrenière showcased his skills, scoring 28 goals and providing 29 assists for a total of 57 points. This performance led to a seven-year, $52.15 million contract extension. Unfortunately, his production declined to just 45 points the following season.
As of this current season, despite a promising performance at the Winter Classic against the Florida Panthers, inconsistent play has persisted. A turning point came on January 8 during a game against the Buffalo Sabres, where a costly mistake led to head coach Mike Sullivan demoting Lafrenière to the third line.
Future Prospects
Lafrenière has demonstrated the potential of being a near-60 point player, but achieving this once in six years raises concerns. A change of scenery may be beneficial for his career trajectory, as new environments can often unlock hidden talents.
As the March 6 trade deadline approaches, the Rangers are keen on exploring possible trades, making it a crucial period for both the team and Lafrenière. A significant offer from another franchise could lead to a fresh start for him and pave the way for the Rangers’ retooling ambitions.
