A man has been issued a two-year restraining order for stalking Liverpool Women’s football player Marie Hobinger. Mangal Dalal, aged 42, persistently sent sexually explicit messages to Hobinger via Instagram, as revealed in court proceedings at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that between January and February 2025, Dalal bombarded Hobinger with inappropriate content, including images of underwear. He expressed his desire to be intimate with her, stating he would “rip her shorts off” and wanting to have children together.

Hobinger shared the emotional toll these messages had on her. In her victim impact statement, she described her distress, stating: “This incident has meant I now struggle to sleep.” She explained that living alone heightened her anxiety, making her fear for her safety when home alone.
During the matches, she became distracted by concerns over the audience’s gaze, saying, “I should feel focused and strong.” Hobinger emphasized that no woman should endure such treatment, criticizing the sexualization of women in football.
Legal Outcomes
Dalal, a resident of west London, admitted to stalking during a court appearance in December. Judge Hina Rai condemned the nature of Dalal’s messages, highlighting how they caused fear and distress, significantly affecting Hobinger’s day-to-day life.
As part of his sentencing, Dalal must complete 18 months of community service, undergo 25 days of rehabilitation, and pay court costs totaling £764.
