US Snowstorm Strands Motorists in 100-Vehicle Pile-Up

Severe weather conditions in Michigan led to a significant pile-up involving over 100 vehicles. This incident occurred as a winter storm created “treacherous” travel conditions. The event took place on Interstate 196, located southwest of Grand Rapids, where both directions of traffic were shut down for safety measures.

The Michigan State Police reported numerous injuries from the crashes, but fortunately, no fatalities were confirmed. The pile-up involved various vehicles, including more than 30 trailer trucks.

Pedro Mata Jr., a motorist involved in the incident, described the visibility challenges as he drove in blowing snow. He was traveling at a speed of 32-40 km/h (20-25 mph) and struggled to see vehicles ahead of him. After safely stopping his truck, Mata moved to the median to avoid potential collisions from vehicles behind him.
