Sánchez Concludes Initial Group Talks on Geopolitical Crisis Without Junts

Pedro Sánchez is undertaking critical discussions about the ongoing geopolitical crisis in a series of meetings at the Moncloa. Initially announced on January 6, the meetings will include various parliamentary leaders, excluding the far-right Vox party. These talks come in the wake of Sánchez’s announcement to potentially send Spanish troops to Ukraine once a ceasefire is established.

Sánchez’s Geopolitical Strategy

The Spanish Prime Minister is not only focusing on Ukraine but has also indicated plans to send troops to Palestine. He has highlighted violations of ceasefire agreements by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a catalyst for this decision.

Upcoming Meetings

The first set of meetings is scheduled for next week. Key appointments include:

  • January 19: Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the Popular Party, will meet Sánchez at 6 PM.
  • January 20:
    • 10 AM – Sumar spokespersons.
    • 11 AM – Esquerra Republicana spokesperson Gabriel Rufián.
  • January 22:
    • 10 AM – EH Bildu spokesperson Mertxe Aizpurúa.
    • 11 AM – PNV spokesperson Maribel Vaquero.

Sánchez’s interactions with Junts per Catalunya, led by Carles Puigdemont, have been notably excluded from these discussions. The party has stated it considers itself informed of these proceedings without the need for a meeting.

International Engagements

Additionally, Sánchez’s government is keen on participating in a European mission to monitor Greenland. This decision arises in response to renewed threats from the United States under Donald Trump’s administration.

These strategic movements underline Sánchez’s commitment to navigating a complex geopolitical landscape while addressing bilateral relations within Spain. The outcomes of these discussions will play a crucial role in shaping Spain’s foreign and domestic policy moving forward.
