Junts Opts Out of Sánchez’s Party Talks: “Photo Unnecessary”

The parliamentary group of Junts has declined to meet with Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, next week. This was part of the ongoing discussions regarding the potential deployment of Spanish troops to Ukraine. It is also aimed at determining Spain’s contributions once the war concludes.

Junts Refuses Meeting with Sánchez

Despite having been in contact with the government, Junts, led by Carles Puigdemont, stated they feel adequately informed and see no need for a meeting. They emphasized that since no additional topics will be discussed, a photo opportunity is unnecessary.

Political Context

Last November, Junts declared the legislative session “blocked.” They voiced their opposition to many legislative proposals from the government and the PSOE, claiming the socialists did not fulfill agreements made after the 2023 general elections. This declaration led to a breakdown in relations between Junts and the Sánchez administration.

Sánchez later confirmed the lack of communication with Junts, which did not prevent the government from trying to arrange a meeting. The Prime Minister is set to begin a series of discussions with various parliamentary groups next week.

Upcoming Meetings

The meeting schedule includes:

  • Monday, January 18: Pedro Sánchez and Alberto Núñez Feijóo (PP) at 18:00.
  • Tuesday, January 20: Meetings with Sumar (10:00) and ERC (11:00).
  • Thursday, January 22: Sessions with Bildu (10:00) and PNV (11:00).

These meetings are crucial for the government as they navigate complex political dynamics and discussions on military involvement in Ukraine.
