Fargo Cancels MLK Jr. Day Celebration After Funding Cuts

Fargo will not host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration this January due to funding cuts. This marks the first time in over 20 years that the city has canceled the event. The Fargo City Commission made the decision in September, affecting funding for the celebration managed by the Fargo Human Rights Commission and Fred’s Dissonance.

Event Details and Historical Context

The MLK celebration typically occurs on January 19, the third Monday of January, observing King’s birthday on January 15. This event has included various performances and has handed out awards to local businesses, adults, and youth who promoted human rights. Last year’s celebration attracted a significant crowd at the Fargo Theater, and the city allocated $17,886 for the event.

Funding Cuts and Their Implications

In addition to the cancellation of the MLK event, the City Commission also cut $12,500 from Juneteenth celebrations. In a statement, city officials described the cuts as part of a “broader budget realignment” aimed at prioritizing essential services and rethinking allocations for social services and arts funding.

  • MLK Celebrations Cancelled: First cancellation in over two decades.
  • Event Funding: City spent $17,886 last year.
  • Additional Cuts: $12,500 cut for Juneteenth.

Community Response

Human Rights Commission Chair Sekou Sirleaf criticized the funding cuts as “shameful” and counterproductive. He pointed out that the decision follows a recent defunding of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Department. Furthermore, the city plans to disband several commissions unless they provide restructuring plans within two months.

Sirleaf emphasized the need for community engagement, stating, “We should be going forward. We shouldn’t be going backward.” He is actively seeking local organizations to resurrect both the MLK and Juneteenth celebrations, which hold significant importance for the community.

Alternative Celebrations

While Fargo will not have its own event, Concordia College in Moorhead will host a celebration on January 20, offering various breakout sessions throughout the day. Community members are encouraged to participate in observance activities, whether through service or education.

  • Alternative Event: Concordia College Celebration, January 20.
  • Time: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
