Democrats Declare Victory for Larry Pemberton

Larry Pemberton Jr., representing the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, has achieved a historic victory, becoming the first publicly recognized member of a Connecticut tribe to secure a seat in the state’s House of Representatives. This election, held on a Tuesday, continues the longstanding Democratic dominance in the 139th House District, which includes Ledyard, Montville, and Norwich.

Election Results

Pemberton’s victory was significant, as he won with approximately 64% of the votes. His main opponent, Republican Brandon Sabbag, garnered 28%, while write-in candidate Mark Adams received 7%. Overall voter turnout for this election was recorded at 20%.

Historical Context

This win marks an unbroken streak of Democratic victories in the district since its establishment following the 1990 census. The election followed the passing of Democrat Rep. Kevin Ryan, who had served since 1992.

Pemberton’s Background

  • Pemberton was previously an unaffiliated voter.
  • He is a political newcomer, encouraged by state Sen. Cathy Osten.
  • Pemberton resides in the Uncasville section of Montville with his wife and two children.

Controversies and Challenges

Sabbag’s campaign faced scrutiny following reports of his criminal history, which includes misdemeanor assault and felony witness tampering from 2018. Additionally, there is an ongoing legal dispute involving Adams, who claims he was improperly excluded from the ballot due to a technicality regarding his nomination papers. If successful, Adams could potentially force a new election.

Current Political Landscape

Pemberton’s victory restores the Democrats’ supermajority in the House, bringing the total to 102 Democrats against 49 Republicans. This outcome reinforces the significance of Democratic leadership in Connecticut’s General Assembly.
