Remembering the Life and Legacy of Melissa A. Thomas

Melissa A. Thomas, aged 62, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026, at University Hospital in Syracuse, New York. Her life, filled with love and family, touched many throughout her years.
Early Life and Education
Born on March 3, 1963, in Watertown, New York, Melissa was the daughter of William and Barbara Decker. She completed her education at Carthage Central High School.
Family and Personal Life
After high school, Melissa married Dwayne Woodruff, and the couple was relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii, due to military service. They started a family but later divorced.
Upon returning to Black River, Melissa married Forest W. Thomas Jr., who sadly passed away on February 17, 2025.
Children and Grandchildren
Melissa is survived by three children: Jesse Woodruff from Florida, Joshua Woodruff, and Chenoa Woodruff from Watertown, as well as Forest “Billy” Thomas III, also from Watertown.

Melissa’s family extended to her siblings: Stephen and Natalie Decker of Pennsylvania, Christopher and Lisa Decker of Watson, NY, Roxanne and Patrick Kenney of Black River, NY, William and Nichole Decker of Oswego, NY, Robert and Erin Decker of Watertown, NY, and Virginia “Gigi” and Robert Buckley of Black River, NY. She cherished her numerous nieces and nephews as well.
Final Years and Celebration of Life
Melissa’s life was marked by her passion for baking and her love for her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Jacob G. Thomas, who passed away on September 29, 2019, and her parents, William and Barbara Decker.
Arrangements have been handled by the Bruce Funeral Home of Black River. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Sunday, January 18, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Black River American Legion. Burial will occur in the spring at Black River Cemetery.
