22 Montgomery Co. School Employees Flagged in Background Rescreening

Recent background rescreening efforts in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) have raised serious concerns regarding employee eligibility. This process aimed to clear a backlog of nearly 10,600 checks for school staff.

Background Rescreening Findings

During this review, 22 employees were flagged. Among them, two individuals had disqualifying criminal charges, while an additional 20 were identified with findings from Child Protective Services (CPS).

Disqualifying Offenses in Maryland

Maryland law identifies 14 specific criminal offenses that disqualify individuals from employment. These serious offenses include:

  • Assault
  • Child sexual abuse
  • Other violent crimes

Indicated Findings from Child Protective Services

Child Protective Services can issue “indicated findings” when there is credible evidence of child abuse or neglect. These findings do not necessarily equate to a criminal conviction. Instead, they indicate that evidence has not been satisfactorily refuted, as clarified by the Montgomery County inspector general’s office.

Next Steps for Flagged Employees

When employees are flagged for either criminal offenses or indicated findings, specific processes are triggered by MCPS. These include:
