Blue Jackets Dismiss Coach Dean Evason; Appoint Rick Bowness as Successor

The Columbus Blue Jackets have made significant changes to their coaching staff by dismissing head coach Dean Evason and appointing Rick Bowness as his successor. The announcement came on a Monday, highlighting a tumultuous season for the team.

Coaching Changes and Team Performance

In addition to Evason’s dismissal, assistant coach Steve McCarthy was also relieved of his duties. General manager Don Waddell expressed the team’s frustrations, stating, “This season has been a frustrating one for all of us. We are not performing at a level that meets our expectations.” He acknowledged the shared responsibility for the team’s poor performance this season.

Evason, who took charge before the 2024-25 season, led the Blue Jackets to a record of 40 wins, 33 losses, and 9 overtime losses in his first year. However, the team has struggled this season, currently holding a record of 19 wins, 19 losses, and 7 overtime losses. This performance places them tied for last in the Eastern Conference.

Rick Bowness: A New Era

Rick Bowness, the newly appointed head coach, brings a wealth of experience to the Blue Jackets. Prior to this role, he served as head coach for the Winnipeg Jets from 2022 to 2024, achieving a record of 98 wins, 57 losses, and 9 overtime losses. Bowness also had a successful tenure with the Dallas Stars, leading them to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 and accumulating an overall record of 89 wins, 62 losses, and 25 overtime losses from 2019 to 2022.

Waddell praised Bowness, stating, “He is a tremendous coach with invaluable experience and knowledge.” He reiterated that Bowness’s ability to foster structure and strong defense would be crucial as the team seeks to turn its season around.

Upcoming Matches

Bowness is set to make his coaching debut on Tuesday night at home against the Calgary Flames. Following this match, the Blue Jackets will host the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday before heading on the road to face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
