Zdenek Matejovský: Multilingual Storyteller of the Canadian Experience

Zdenek Matejovský is a unique figure in the world of sports journalism. A multilingual storyteller, he covers the NHL for European media. He has worked in this field for over 30 years, interviewing countless players. However, his personal story is just as intriguing as his professional life.

Zdenek Matejovský: A Multilingual Journey

At 66 years old, Matejovský has a remarkable background that many in Quebec may not know. His stories about the Montreal Canadiens reach audiences in Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Austria.

Early Life in Czechoslovakia

Born in the 1960s in Sedlice, Czechoslovakia, Matejovský grew up under a communist regime. He often reflects on the hardships of that era, particularly the oppressive “iron curtain” separating people from freedom. As a young man, he was unable to travel freely, prompting a sense of rebellion within him.

When he turned 18, he took his first chance to travel, applying for permission to visit Tunisia. Surprisingly, his request was granted. This unexpected approval ignited dreams of a life beyond his restrictive homeland.

Defection Attempts

  • First escape plan: Tunisia (Approval granted; trip taken)
  • Second escape plan: Cyprus (Ambassador approached for asylum; passport confiscated)
  • Third escape plan: Cuba (Calculated escape during stop in Montreal)

While traveling to Cuba, Matejovský met a fellow traveler who expressed a desire to defect in Montreal. Although initially suspicious, he recognized the gravity of the moment when they arrived in Canada and both sought political asylum. With only two dollars in his pocket, Matejovský overcame fear and uncertainty, embracing his new life.

A New Career in Canada

Matejovský immigrated to Canada in 1980 and quickly found work in a German restaurant. His linguistic skills—proficient in Czech, German, Russian, Slovak, Polish, and English—helped him adapt. He later added French to his repertoire.

His media career began during a trip to Egypt, where a Czech journalist encouraged him to write about hockey in Canada. On December 2, 1995, he covered his first NHL game, which turned out to be Patrick Roy’s final match with the Montreal Canadiens. Excitement filled the air as his article found a wide audience.

Building a Sports Legacy

Zdenek Matejovský has built an impressive career, now covering the Canadiens for various international broadcasters. He has developed personal relationships with players, particularly enjoying conversations with Slovak forward Juraj Slafkovský. His commitment to journalism keeps him actively on the road, following the team even during international games.

Reflections on Success

Living in Chambly, Canada, he considers the country his true home. Reflecting on his journey, he recalls arriving with only two dollars and now owning property. His journey has been one of resilience and hard work.

Zdenek Matejovský’s story is not just about hockey but also a testament to the immigrant experience, making him a true multilingual storyteller of the Canadian experience.
