Manitobans Gain Access to New Digital Health Card

Residents of Manitoba now have the option to access a digital health card directly on their smartphones. This advancement allows individuals registered with the province’s health system to easily request a digital version of their health card for convenient access when they seek medical care.

Transition to Digital Health Cards

This initiative comes one year after the Manitoba government began transitioning from traditional paper health cards to more durable plastic cards. Premier Wab Kinew highlighted the significance of this step towards modernizing health care in the province.

Convenience in Emergencies

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara emphasized the practical benefits of digital health cards, especially in emergency situations. For instance, during recent wildfires, many individuals were compelled to evacuate their homes rapidly, often without vital documents. The digital health card offers a resource to streamline access to health services during such crises.

Features of the Digital Health Card

  • The digital card will be integrated within the MB Wallet app.
  • Residents can schedule appointments using the MediNav online booking system.
  • Parents can manage their children’s health cards through the same app.
  • The government has implemented security measures to protect users’ health information.

Kinew also mentioned plans to potentially expand the app’s functionality to include services such as hunting and fishing licenses. Importantly, the use of the digital health card is entirely optional, providing individuals with the choice to select their preferred method, either digital or plastic, when applying for a new health card.

Costs and Availability

The development and implementation of the digital health card incurred a cost of $1.9 million. Starting Monday afternoon, residents can apply for their digital cards online, provided they have a My Manitoba Health Card account and the MB Wallet app installed on their devices.

This move towards digital health services marks a significant step in enhancing the accessibility and convenience of health care for Manitobans, ensuring they have essential information at their fingertips when needed most.
