New York City Nurses Strike: Thousands Walk Off Jobs at Major Hospitals

The largest strike of nurses in New York City commenced as nearly 15,000 nurses transitioned from their roles at five major hospitals. Represented by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), these nurses embarked on the strike after contract negotiations broke down. Key players in this ongoing labor dispute include Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West, Montefiore Einstein, and NewYork-Presbyterian.

Details of the Nurses Strike

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency ahead of the strike, concerned it might disrupt critical patient care across the city. The nurses initiated their walkout starting at 6 a.m. at Mount Sinai and an hour later at the remaining hospitals. NYSNA plans to update the public via a press conference on the strike’s progress.

Negotiation Breakdown

The impasse arose despite continuous bargaining over the weekend. NYSNA criticized Montefiore, Mount Sinai, and NewYork-Presbyterian for prioritizing profits over patient care. Key sticking points included:

  • Wage increases
  • Safe staffing levels
  • Comprehensive health care coverage
  • Pensions
  • Workplace protections against violence

Nancy Hagans, president of NYSNA, condemned the hospitals for attempting to reduce health benefits for nurses who dedicate their health to patient care. In contrast, Montefiore characterized some union demands as “reckless and irresponsible.”

Impact on Patients

Governor Hochul issued executive orders to ensure the safety and health of patients during the strike. Hospital leaders have urged patients not to delay treatments and remain vigilant for updates from their healthcare providers. NYSNA reassured patients that seeking care should not be viewed as crossing a strike line.

Despite the ongoing strike, hospitals will maintain operations and care will continue for patients.

City Officials Respond

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized his commitment to ensuring that residents have access to healthcare. He acknowledged the strike’s potential consequences, especially during flu season, and highlighted the importance of nurses’ roles in the city’s recovery.

As negotiations continue, city officials remain optimistic that a resolution can be achieved. The mayor urged all parties to reach an agreement that respects nurses’ contributions while ensuring that hospitals remain open for New Yorkers in need.
