SpaceX Launches Additional 7,500 Satellites for Starlink Network

SpaceX has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch an additional 7,500 satellites as part of its Starlink network. This decision marks a significant expansion of its second-generation satellite constellation, building on the initial authorization granted in December 2022.

Expansion of the Starlink Network

The new satellites will enhance coverage across various frequencies, including Ku, Ka, V, E, and W bands. This upgrade will support both Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) and Mobile Satellite Service (MSS), effectively providing internet access and mobile network capabilities.

  • Number of additional satellites: 7,500
  • Initial approval date: December 2022
  • Frequency bands used: Ku, Ka, V, E, W

Operational Altitudes and Future Plans

The satellites will operate at altitudes between 340 to 485 kilometers. Earlier this year, SpaceX announced a plan to lower existing satellites from 550 kilometers to 480 kilometers. This adjustment is aimed at reducing congestion and collision risks in space.

The lower altitude is feasible due to the recent decrease in solar activity, which reduces atmospheric drag on satellites. As a result, these satellites are expected to be replaced within the next 11 years before the solar cycle peaks again.

Further Proposals to the FCC

In addition to the recent approval, SpaceX submitted a request to launch another 15,000 satellites to bolster mobile networks. This proposal has faced opposition from other satellite operators, like Viasat, due to the domination of SpaceX in satellite numbers.

Currently, there are about 14,000 operational satellites in orbit from various companies. Given SpaceX’s history, it is likely that they will receive the necessary approvals for their future projects.
