Minneapolis Police Arrest Anti-ICE Vandal Targeting Lake Street Businesses

Minneapolis police have apprehended a 24-year-old man for vandalizing several businesses along Lake Street. This incident occurred on a Saturday evening, around 7 p.m.

Details of the Vandalism Incident

While monitoring a march on Lake Street, officers observed the suspect spray-painting a Metro Transit bus. He continued to deface multiple establishments, including:

  • A church
  • A theater
  • A Minneapolis school building
  • A healthcare building
  • Target

These locations are situated in what is regarded as the heart of Minneapolis’ immigrant community. Utilizing surveillance cameras, police were able to track the vandal’s movements effectively. As authorities approached him, he attempted to flee. However, he was arrested shortly thereafter.

Community Impact and Chief’s Statement

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara expressed concerns about the implications of such vandalism. He stated, “Damage being done would affect the heart of our immigrant community along Lake Street.” O’Hara highlighted the significance of the area to local immigrant businesses, underscoring that many were involved in rebuilding the community after previous disturbances.

He emphasized the importance of peaceful protests, saying, “If you are going to object, do it peacefully.” His remarks were in line with concerns about the potential unrest linked to increased ICE activity in Minneapolis.

Graffiti Content and Investigation Status

Authorities released images of the graffiti, which featured anti-ICE messages and various vulgarities. At this time, the affiliation of the marchers remains unclear. A larger protest against ICE had taken place earlier that day but was described as being largely peaceful.

Legal Proceedings

The arrested man has been booked into Hennepin County Jail on probable cause for property damage. The police continue to monitor the area for any further incidents of vandalism.
