Olympic Hockey Test Event Boosts IIHF President’s Confidence

The president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), Luc Tardif, expressed growing confidence regarding the Milan Cortina Olympic tournament following a recent test event at the Santagiulia Arena. The event displayed the ice surface’s durability during a series of three games, crucial for the upcoming competition scheduled from February 5 to 22, featuring 32 men’s and women’s matches.

Positive Outcomes from the Test Event

Tardif’s remarks suggest a favorable outlook after observing the test event over the weekend. He stated, “I’m going back happy,” and emphasized that the National Hockey League (NHL) is likely to participate. Despite ongoing construction at the arena and related facilities, he remained focused on the essential aspect of ice quality.

Construction Progress and Observations

  • Construction delays have been a concern, but Tardif noted that organizers can manage some shortcomings.
  • The ice installation commenced on December 20, causing a delay in the previously planned test event.
  • Critical stages of construction were paused to facilitate the test event, which was deemed vital for ensuring optimal conditions.

Canadian ice master Dan Moffatt, associated with the Colorado Avalanche, supervised the maintenance of the ice across both Olympic venues. His expertise proved vital as he analyzed issues during gameplay, including a hole that formed on the ice, which he described as normal for initial ice use.

Feedback and Improvements

The test event served as an opportunity to identify necessary adjustments before the Olympics. Although the ice surface showed signs of wear, Tardif noted that it held up well under significant use, similar to the intensity of a World Hockey Championship. He believes any issues, such as discoloration, will be resolved before the tournament begins.

Challenges Ahead

  • The capacity of the arena is currently at 11,800, well short of the targeted 14,000.
  • There are ongoing discussions to address the capacity concerns to enhance fan attendance.
  • Food services and hospitality areas are still under construction, utilizing food trucks for the event.

Despite some compromises, Tardif remains optimistic about the setting and the overall ice conditions. He emphasized the significance of these preparations for welcoming NHL players back to the Olympics after a 12-year hiatus. With the intention of fostering NHL participation in future Olympic events, including the 2030 Games in France and the 2034 Games in Utah, Tardif pointed to the potential for a fruitful collaboration post-Milan.

Future Collaboration with NHL

As discussions about Olympic participation and a potential World Cup tournament continue, Tardif expressed eagerness to enhance the relationship between IIHF and the NHL. His confidence reflects a commitment to delivering a successful Olympic tournament and preparing for future events. “Now I’m a little bit more confident,” Tardif concluded, looking ahead with optimism.
