Manilva City Council’s Festival Costs Surge Over 550% Above Budget

The Manilva City Council is facing scrutiny over its festival expenditures. Reports indicate a staggering 554.26% overspend compared to the budget allocated for events in 2025. Initially, the council budgeted €70,000 for festivities; however, actual spending soared to €388,000.
Details of the Budget Overspend
This financial discrepancy was highlighted by Antonio Marín, a representative from the VOX party. During a recent extraordinary meeting held on December 29, the council members approved an additional €18,000 for “Spectacles and Events,” emphasizing the issue of poor budget planning.
- Initial Budget: €70,000
- Actual Expenditures: €388,000
- Overspend Rate: 554.26%
- Additional Funds Appropriated: €18,000
Concerns Over Financial Management
The use of extraordinary legal procedures for budget adjustments has raised questions about the city’s financial management. Such methods should only be deployed in emergencies but have become routine. This raises concerns about the City Council’s budgeting discipline and its ability to foresee and prioritize public spending effectively.
Moreover, other expenses, such as €14,278 for the maintenance of the Castillo de la Duquesa, could have been planned within the standard budget, thus avoiding exceptional funding requests.
Impact on Local Governance
The ongoing budgetary deviations may undermine both economic and political oversight within the council. While festivals contribute significantly to the community’s social life, their financing must remain within the boundaries of sound fiscal management.
As the council continues to grapple with budgetary discipline, it must find a balance between fostering community engagement through events and adhering to responsible financial practices. The future effectiveness of local governance depends on this balance being achieved.
