Vancouver Aquarium has unveiled a new permanent exhibit, “Amazing Axolotls,” which showcases one of the world’s most unique amphibians. This exhibit opened on January 11 and has expanded the aquarium’s existing axolotl display into a more immersive and educational experience. The space highlights the axolotl’s remarkable characteristics, including its feathery gills and regenerative abilities while emphasizing the importance of conservation efforts.

The “Amazing Axolotls” exhibit features a carefully designed gallery that includes:
- Two dedicated viewing habitats for axolotls.
- One habitat showcasing other aquatic species.
- Accessibility for visitors of all ages, with all habitats built at a similar height.

Interactive elements in the exhibit enhance guest engagement. Educational displays explore various aspects of axolotls, such as:

Mackenzie Neale, the aquarium’s animal care director, expressed the hope that the exhibit will deepen visitors’ understanding of axolotls. She stated, “Axolotls are an exceptionally unique species that spark curiosity and fascination.”
Conservation Significance
Mexico’s consul general in Vancouver, Julián Adem, emphasized the exhibit’s role in promoting the protection of axolotls’ natural habitat. These amphibians are found only in the waterways of Xochimilco in Mexico City, which are critically endangered.
Adem remarked, “This display offers Canadians a closer look at this extraordinary salamander and the need to protect its delicate habitat.” He encouraged visitors to appreciate the vibrant ecosystems where axolotls reside.
