Broncos’ Super Bowl Hero McManus Faces Postseason Struggles After Ten Years

Brandon McManus, once celebrated for his role in securing the Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl victory in 2015, recently faced struggles that contributed to the Green Bay Packers’ postseason elimination. His recent performance raises questions about his future in the league.

Postseason Struggles for McManus

During the wild-card round against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, McManus missed three critical kicks, including an essential extra point. The Packers, leading 21-3 at halftime, ultimately lost the game 31-27, marking a dramatic collapse for the team.

Game Highlights

  • McManus missed a 55-yard field goal just before halftime, following a Bears timeout.
  • With just over six minutes remaining, he missed an extra point, forcing the Packers to chase a touchdown instead of settling for a field goal.
  • A 44-yard attempt also went wide, further sealing the Packers’ fate in the game.

McManus finished the season ranked 28th in the NFL for field goal percentage, managing to convert only 80% of his attempts. This was particularly disappointing after a 2022 season in which he completed 77.6% of his kicks. His struggles this year echo a downward trend since his stellar 2015 postseason.

A Decade Since Super Bowl Glory

Ten years prior, McManus’s perfect playoff performance was pivotal in leading the Broncos to their third Super Bowl title. He successfully kicked 10 field goals, including two from over 50 yards, and made all his extra-point attempts. The team triumphed over formidable opponents, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots, culminating in their Super Bowl 50 victory against the Carolina Panthers.

Changes in Denver

After years as the Broncos’ reliable kicker, McManus was ultimately released by new head coach Sean Payton during the offseason in May 2023. The Broncos have since signed Wil Lutz, who has shown impressive accuracy with 89% of his field goals successful, including a substantial percentage on longer attempts.

Packers’ Late-Season Collapse

The Packers’ struggles began with a loss to the Broncos on December 14, when they squandered a 23-14 lead. Compounding their issues, they lost All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons to a season-ending injury. This defeat initiated a five-game losing streak, pushing Green Bay out of playoff contention.

Looking Ahead

The teams are scheduled to meet again in 2027 at Lambeau Field, allowing both franchises an opportunity to reassess their directions following disappointing seasons.
