24-Year-Old Charged with Murder After 6 Killed: NPR

A tragic shooting incident in Clay County, Mississippi, on Friday night resulted in six fatalities, marking one of the most horrific events in recent local history. Authorities have taken a 24-year-old suspect, Daricka Moore, into custody and charged him with murder.
Details of the Incident
The violent rampage spanned three separate locations. The victims ranged in age from a 7-year-old girl to a 67-year-old man. Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott confirmed the details during a press briefing on Saturday.
- Victims included Moore’s father, uncle, and brother.
- The youngest victim was a 7-year-old girl, who was also related to the shooter.
Sequence of Events
The initial shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. According to investigators, Moore allegedly shot his father, uncle, and brother in the head at the first location. He then stole his brother’s truck and headed to a second site, where he reportedly attempted sexual battery on a victim.
In this second location, witnesses claim that Moore shot and killed the 7-year-old girl, threatening another child at the scene with a gun. The sheriff indicated that it remained uncertain whether the gun was fired at the second child.
Further Violence and Arrest
Moore then moved to a third location, where two more males were found dead from gunshot wounds. The sheriff’s office is still determining the relationship between this last set of victims, one of whom was identified as a pastor at a local church.
Legal Consequences
Moore now faces charges of first-degree murder, with expectations for the charges to escalate to capital murder as the investigation progresses. District Attorney Scott Colom noted the severe nature of the crimes, indicating a likelihood of pursuing the death penalty if applicable.
Colom emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, “Six people, one night, several different scenes. These allegations are among the worst imaginable.”
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this shocking violence, Sheriff Scott remarked on the profound impact it has had on residents. This case continues to unfold, with further legal actions anticipated against Moore in the coming days.
