Environment Canada Warns of Slick Roads from Freezing Rain in GTA Tonight

Environment Canada has issued a warning for icy and slippery road conditions across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) tonight due to incoming freezing rain. Residents are urged to exercise caution as travel becomes potentially dangerous.
Weather Alerts for the GTA
A special weather statement is in effect for major areas including:
- Toronto
- Mississauga
- Markham
- Brampton
- Vaughan
- Richmond Hill
Freezing Rain Warning
A yellow freezing rain warning has been specifically issued for:
- Pickering
- Ajax
- Whitby
- Oshawa
These areas may experience greater ice accumulation, ranging from two to four millimeters, which can cause power outages.
Expected Conditions
The precipitation is anticipated to start as snow or rain late this afternoon, transitioning to freezing rain this evening. Experts suggest that some regions may see up to two millimeters of ice.
Officials have cautioned that roadways and walkways will likely become icy and slippery, increasing the risk for pedestrians and drivers. Those in the southern parts of Highway 401, near Lake Ontario, are likely to experience minimal icing, with temperatures hovering just above freezing.
Advice for Residents
Environment Canada advises the public to remain vigilant, especially during the evening commute. Even small ice amounts can create hazardous conditions. The freezing rain is expected to cease later tonight or overnight as temperatures gradually rise above zero.
Given the situation, residents should prioritize safety and consider delaying travel if possible when conditions worsen.
