Social Media Platform X Swaps Iran Flag Emoji for Lion-Sun Symbol Amid Protests

Social media platform X has introduced a significant change by replacing the Iranian flag emoji with the historic Lion-and-Sun symbol. This alteration, noted by users on Friday, comes amid escalating unrest in Iran.
Background on the Flag Change
The update removes the flag established post-1979 Islamic Revolution, opting for a historical emblem associated with Iran’s monarchy. The Lion-and-Sun symbol had adorned Iranian flags for centuries prior to the revolution. This change affects all accounts on the platform, including those belonging to Iranian officials and state-aligned media such as the Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard.
Request for Change
Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, responded to a user’s request regarding the flag update on Thursday night. By Friday evening, the new emoji had been implemented across the platform, visibly altering accounts including that of Iran’s foreign ministry.
Symbolism and Recent Protests
The Lion-and-Sun emblem, historically tied to the Iranian monarchy, was replaced in 1979 by an emblem representing the Islamic Republic. The current flag features kufic inscriptions proclaiming “Allahu Akbar” along its stripes. Recently, the Lion-and-Sun symbol has gained traction among monarchist groups and segments of the Iranian diaspora opposed to the regime.
- Protests have reignited around the emblem, with demonstrators calling for a return to the monarchy.
- These demonstrations have sparked significant internet restrictions imposed by Iranian authorities.
Tensions and Casualties
The past two weeks have seen at least 62 reported fatalities due to the unrest, according to Iranian rights groups. State media have depicted clashes, fires, and damaged infrastructure, with reports indicating that several police officers were killed in recent violence.
In a response to the ongoing protests, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has vowed not to relent, alleging that demonstrators are acting under foreign influence. State media has labeled the protesters as “terrorists,” a term that critics warn may lead to more severe crackdowns.
International Reactions
As these events unfold, international observers, including U.S. President Donald Trump, are closely monitoring the situation. Videos depicting widespread protests across various Iranian cities have captured considerable attention.
The protests began primarily due to economic struggles marked by soaring inflation and a devaluing currency. However, they have evolved into a broader political movement, openly challenging Iran’s leadership.
