Strong Winds of 70-90 km/h Hit Nation’s Capital

Residents of Ottawa are bracing for strong winds impacting the national capital this Friday afternoon. Environment Canada has issued a warning about wind gusts potentially reaching between 70 to 90 km/h.
Detailed Weather Forecast
According to the agency, rains expected on Friday morning could contribute to these powerful winds. A cold front moving across Ontario is projected to arrive in Ottawa by late afternoon or early evening, possibly intensifying the wind gusts.
Wind Gusts and Temperature Changes
The forecast indicates that wind speeds may decrease from east to west into Friday night. Currently, a mild air mass is over Ottawa and much of Ontario, with temperatures rising significantly.
- Friday’s high temperature is estimated to be 7°C.
- This is a remarkable increase from the normal temperature of -6°C.
The National Capital Commission (NCC) has responded to the warmer weather by temporarily closing the Rideau Canal Skateway to protect the ice. Since its opening on December 31, the skateway has welcomed around 170,000 visitors.
Impact of Wind Chill
As the sun sets, expected gusts will lead to a significant wind chill effect. Temperatures in Ottawa could feel closer to -6°C due to these strong winds. Saturday’s forecast suggests that similar wind conditions will persist, making it feel like -6°C.
Residents should remain cautious and stay updated on changing weather conditions as the strong winds approach the area.
