During an appearance on the Hot Mic Podcast, Sumrall confirmed that Lagway’s decision to enter the transfer portal was voluntary. He emphasized that Lagway is a “tremendous young man” and he expressed regret that the relationship did not lead to a successful tenure at UF.
Details on Lagway’s Departure
Lagway, a former starting quarterback for the Gators, announced his intention to transfer on December 15. He is already exploring options, having visited schools such as Florida State, Virginia, and Baylor. The 6-foot-3, 247-pound player had an impressive freshman season, recording a 6-1 record as a starter. However, his sophomore year was marred by injuries, resulting in a challenging campaign where he passed for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns, and an SEC-high 14 interceptions.
Coaching Philosophy and Team Culture
Sumrall highlighted his vision for the team culture, focusing on toughness and a love for football. In a meeting with Lagway, Sumrall noted, “If you fit that great, if you don’t, then that’s not going to be good.” He expressed a desire for Lagway to remain with the program but acknowledged that ultimately the decision was Lagway’s to make.
Roster Changes and New Additions
- Florida has experienced a significant turnover, losing a total of 31 players to the transfer portal.
- The Gators have secured 12 new commitments, including Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo.
- Current competition for the starting quarterback position will include Tramell Jones Jr., Aidan Warner, and freshman Will Griffin.
Sumrall reiterated his support for Lagway expressing hopes for his future success. “I would have loved to have had the opportunity to coach him,” he said. Maintaining key players like linebacker Myles Graham and receiver Dallas Wilson remains a priority for the coaching staff, with Wilson reportedly signing a lucrative deal with Florida Victorious.
Despite the challenges, Sumrall is dedicated to building a resilient team environment as the Gators prepare for the future.
