Drone Technology Locates Escaped Dog on New Jersey Turnpike

A golden retriever mix named Abbie escaped from a rest stop on the New Jersey Turnpike, leading to a dramatic rescue operation that involved drone technology. The 9-year-old dog traveled approximately 25 miles before being safely located the following day.

Background of the Incident

Abbie was en route from a South Carolina animal shelter to her new home in Maine. She was traveling with several other dogs when the van made a stop at a service area in East Brunswick around 6 a.m. on a Saturday morning. While the dogs were being let out for bathroom breaks, Abbie took off.

Use of Drone Technology in Rescue

Equipped with a tracking tag, Abbie’s location was monitored. Volunteers from the Unmanned Search and Rescue (USAR) drone team participated in the search. This team is dedicated to using drone technology for pet rescue efforts.

The drone utilized thermal imaging to locate Abbie. Ultimately, rescuers found her in a wooded area approximately 15 miles from where she first escaped. The rescue took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Conditions During Rescue

  • Abbie appeared cold and frightened when discovered.
  • A subsequent examination revealed a hip injury requiring surgery.

Outcome of the Rescue

This rescue marked the USAR’s 123rd successful dog recovery. Following her rescue, social media announcements indicated that Abbie would not be heading to Maine. Instead, she would return to South Carolina and be adopted by a local family that had previously fostered her.

Final Victory Animal Rescue expressed their gratitude on social media, thanking all involved agencies: “With boots on the ground and eyes in the sky, Abbie was located and recovered safely.”
