Icy Weather Causes Road Closures and Collisions in Northwest

Icy weather has led to significant road closures and dangerous driving conditions across the Northwest of England. Heavy snowfall overnight prompted the closure of the M60 anti-clockwise between Junctions 1 and 27. According to National Highways North West, these adverse conditions make travel hazardous.

Weather Warnings Across the Region

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning affecting numerous areas, including Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Greater Manchester, Halton, and Warrington. This warning came into effect at midnight and is expected to last until midday on Friday.

Snowfall Predictions and Risks

Blizzard conditions are anticipated in northern Scotland, where snowfall could reach as much as 40cm. This weather system poses several threats to road safety.

  • Driving conditions are expected to deteriorate.
  • There is a risk of icy patches forming due to precipitation.
  • Travel delays are likely as sleet and snow clear.

The Met Office has cautioned that icy conditions may develop quickly as temperatures remain below average. This cold spell is predicted to extend into the weekend and possibly into the following week, with further weather warnings likely.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and consider postponing travel plans until conditions improve. Safety is a top priority as the winter weather continues to impact roadways throughout the region.
