YNW Melly’s Double Homicide Retrial: Key Motions Filed

Rapper YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, was recently present in a Fort Lauderdale courtroom. The session focused on key motions in preparation for his retrial regarding double murder charges. The hearing lasted approximately one hour, where prosecutors and the defense discussed admissible evidence for the upcoming trial.
Background on the Double Homicide Case
Demons is accused of killing his childhood friends, Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams, in October 2018. The alleged murders occurred following a late-night recording session. Authorities allege that Demons attempted to cover up the incident by staging it as a drive-by shooting.
Co-Defendant and Mistrial
Alongside Demons, his co-defendant Cortland “Bortland” Henry is implicated for allegedly driving the vehicle used in the crime and helping to conceal the murders. The first trial for Demons ended in a mistrial in 2023. The jury, consisting of twelve members, was unable to reach a unanimous verdict after deliberating for three days.
Legal Proceedings and Upcoming Dates
The initial trial included various dramatic elements, such as allegations of witness tampering, illicit communications from jail, and purported plans for escape. These matters were addressed in court to determine what evidence would be allowed in Melly’s retrial.

Looking ahead, Demons is scheduled to return to court on January 12, 2024, at 8:45 a.m. for further motions. His witness tampering case trial is set to begin on January 21, 2024, while the double homicide retrial is scheduled for January 2027.
