Runnin’ Utes Prioritize Internal Growth as Big 12 Competition Intensifies

As the competition in the Big 12 intensifies, the Runnin’ Utes of the University of Utah are prioritizing internal growth under the leadership of coach Alex Jensen. In his inaugural season, Jensen emphasizes controlling what can be controlled, focusing on player development despite challenging results.

Recent Performance Against Arizona

The Runnin’ Utes faced No. 1 ranked Arizona in their Big 12 opener, suffering a 19-point defeat. Utah fell behind early, trailing 14-2, and struggled to regain momentum despite cutting the deficit to single digits multiple times in the first half. Currently, the Utes hold a record of 8-6 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12.

Lessons Learned

After the match, Jensen reflected on Arizona’s balanced approach, noting that the Wildcats scored 97 points without a single player exceeding 20 points. He praised their professionalism and consistency, stating that playing such a strong team reinforced the importance of focus and control for his players.

Team Dynamics and Freshman Experience

With 12 newcomers on the roster, Utah is in a building phase. Junior forward Keanu Dawes is the only player from last season’s Big 12 squad. Fifth-year forward James Okonkwo brings league experience from West Virginia, while freshmen like Kendyl Sanders and Obomate Abbey are adapting to the intensity of conference play. Sanders highlighted the physicality of Big 12 competition, expressing readiness for the remaining games.

Upcoming Match Against Colorado

Utah’s next challenge will be against Colorado (11-3, 1-0 Big 12). The Buffaloes are performing well offensively, averaging 86.6 points per game with several key players contributing significantly. Utah aims to improve its defense, currently allowing 79.8 points per game, slightly behind Colorado’s 78.2 points allowed.

  • Key Players for Colorado:
    • Isaiah Johnson: 15.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists per game
    • Barrington Hargress: 13.6 points, 4.8 assists per game

Focus on Development

Jensen’s strategy centers on continuous player improvement, aiming to cultivate the team for both present and future success. He believes consistent focus on fundamentals—such as minimizing turnovers and excelling in transition—is crucial for achieving victory. The Runnin’ Utes hope this focus will yield positive outcomes, similar to their earlier win against Ole Miss.

Roster Updates

In addition to ongoing development, the Utes have added 6-foot-10 walk-on center Colin McHaney to their roster. McHaney, a product of Milton, Georgia, joins the team as a midseason addition and may provide much-needed depth in the front court.
