BYU Elevates Kelly Poppinga to Defensive Coordinator

Kelly Poppinga has been promoted to Defensive Coordinator at BYU after serving three years on Jay Hill’s defensive staff. This move comes as a response to Hill’s departure to Michigan, marking a significant transition for the Cougars. Poppinga takes over the role previously held by Hill, who has joined Michigan’s coaching staff under former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham.

BYU’s Coaching Staff Changes

Alongside Poppinga’s promotion, the Cougars have made several important coaching changes:

  • Sione Po’uha has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.
  • Demario Warren has been appointed as the new Defensive Passing Game Coordinator and Cornerbacks Coach, replacing Jernaro Gilford, who moved to Michigan.

Statements from BYU Leadership

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake expressed confidence in the new appointments, emphasizing the collaborative efforts within the coaching staff. He stated, “I’m proud of their collaborative efforts and the momentum we have built,” indicating faith in both Poppinga’s and Po’uha’s abilities to enhance the team’s performance.

Poppinga’s Background and Experience

Poppinga, a former All-Mountain West linebacker, has a rich history with BYU football. His family connection to the program spans nearly 50 years. After a brief hiatus from BYU, he returned to the coaching staff in 2023. Throughout his career, he has coached players who have made successful transitions to the NFL, including notable talents like Kyle Van Noy and Fred Warner.

Commitments to BYU Football

Following the Cougars’ impressive 2022 season, which culminated in a 25-21 win over Georgia Tech and a 12-2 record, the program has secured several key commitments for the upcoming season. Prominent players returning include:

  • Keanu Tanuvasa (Defensive Tackle)

  • Anisi Purcell (Defensive Tackle)
  • Raider Damuni (Safety)
  • Tre Alexander (Cornerback)
  • Nusi Taumoepeau (Defensive End)

Warren’s Experience and Contributions

  • Leading Southern Utah’s defense while helping them achieve significant rankings.
  • Contributing to Boise State’s success, with a defense that ranked 15th nationally in pass defense.

With these changes, BYU aims to continue building upon its recent successes and enhance its football program. The new defensive strategies under Poppinga’s leadership and the influx of top-tier talent are expected to play a crucial role in BYU’s push for championships in the coming years.
